AI seeks Project Coordinator (1½ years)

The Africa Institute is the intergovernmental organization that serves 23 English speaking African countries in the management of chemicals and hazardous wastei. It is based in Pretoria, South Africa. It serves to strengthen the capacity of the region to monitor and control the trans-boundary movement of chemicals and hazardous wastes and to ensure their environmentally sound management. The Institute invites applications for the post of a Project Coordinator.

The Project Coordinator will coordinate all projects implemented by the Institute in the various countries that constitute the Institute. This position is on a contract basis with a possibility of renewal.

The incumbent will be paid an inclusive remuneration package of R378, 456.00.

Requirements:

The applicants must have at least an honours degree in the Natural Sciences, Environmental Sciences, or related fields. A Project Management qualification plus experience in running large international or regional projects will be an added advantage. A Master degree in the above-mentioned fields of study will also be an added advantage. The post requires a broad understanding and knowledge of environmental, project management, and developmental issues globally, regionally, and locally, management skills, computer literacy, financial management, procurement skills, and analytical and innovative thinking.  Experience in and understanding of international chemicals and waste management and environmental challenges emanating from chemicals and hazardous waste, training skills, and multilateral environmental agreements will also be an added advantage. The incumbent should have at least 3 years working experience and be willing to travel extensively within Africa and internationally. The incumbent should also have the ability to conduct research, collect and analyse data, and write reports.

Duties:
The incumbent will be expected:

•    To act as a project coordinator for the projects implemented in the English speaking African countries and may be required to work beyond this region
•    Manage service providers/consultants for various projects
•    Develop and monitor project implementation plans
•    Coordinate and engage with national, regional and international stakeholders    
•    Review project outputs and make recommendations
•    Develop project proposals/business plans for fund-raising purposes
•    Liaise with all national and international partners involved in project implementation.
•    Convene and facilitate meetings, training workshops, field missions for experts and consultants in the region.
•    Liaise with external and internal providers and other interested stakeholders.
•    Prepare reports on the implementation of projects activities/ outputs
•    Represent the Africa Institute at meetings
•    Engage in other activities as may be assigned by the Executive Director

The Project Coordinator will be based in Pretoria within the Africa Institute and will report to the Executive Director of the Africa Institute.
